Speech-language-hearing specialists and professionals see and treat clients of all ages, including infants, adolescents, adults, and the elderly.

In general, speech language pathologists, audiologists, and other hearing science professionals diagnose and treat hearing and speech disorders. However, some conduct research designed to improve hearing assistance technology and innovation. Specialists working with patients typically offer services aimed at treating hearing loss, language delay, and speech problems.

Career opportunities in speech-language-hearing sciences are expected to increase baby boomers currently employed in this field retire opening up new positions that will need to be filled. Job opportunities will be greatest for highly skilled professionals with bilingual and multicultural expertise.
