Health Administration

Health administration, also known as healthcare management, health systems management, and medical and health services management, is the career field of administration and management of hospitals, networks of hospitals, healthcare systems, and public health systems. While the job descriptions of most healthcare administrators and managers are administrative, operational, and managerial in nature, they are still healthcare professionals.

Within the field of health administration, there are two types of administrators: generalists and specialists. Generalists manage entire healthcare facilities. Specialists are responsible for management and operations of specific divisions or departments, such as human resources, finance, or marketing.

The demand for qualified health administrators and managers is strong and growing. Hospitals, clinics and other healthcare facilities are operated just like any other private company. They must produce revenue, control costs and generate profits. They need administrators and managers that can make this happen. Health administrators include CEOs, middle managers, supervisors, and consultants. They supervice, coordinate, and plan the effective and efficient delivery of medical services. Health adminstrators may oversee hospitals with over 10,000 employees. Others manage smaller health clinics with fewer than 100 employees.
