Gerontology

Gerontologists specialize in human aging. They focus on how people change physically, socially, and mentally as they age. Since life expectancy is increasing, demand for gerontologists should be high through the near future.

Elderly people often struggle with health problems since aging causes muscles, bones, and tissues to weaken. Likewise, immunity diminishes with age. Elderly people frequently suffer from dementia, diabetes, eye problems, back pain, arthritis, and heart disease.

In addition to medical care, the elderly frequently meet with mental health specialists to cope with emotional problems caused by losing loved ones, coping with health problems, and other aged related issues.

It's projected that by 2030 70 million Americans will be 65 or older.

Through the near future, numerous career opportunities will be available for the following specialists:
  • Geriatricians
  • Geriatric Pharmacists
  • Geriatric Psychiatrists
  • Geriatric Nurses
  • Physician Assistants
  • Physical Therapists
  • Dental Lab Technicians
  • Podiatrists
