Alternative and Complementary Medicine

A growing number of people seeking alternatives to invasive surgery, prescription drugs and other conventional procedures common in Western medicine are now turning to more holistic alternative and complementary medicine including naturopahy, chinese medicine, acupuncture and massage therapy to treat disease and illness.

Alternative and complementary medicine includes therapies that focus on whole medical systems, biological base practices, mind-body medicine, energy medicine, and manipulative body-based practices. Alternative medical professionals focus more on prevention rather than treatment. The premise of alternative medicine is that, if treated properly, the body can and will heal itself. Many alternative and complementary medical practitioners incorporate ancient medical practices and meditation into the treatment plans they develop for their patients.

Although alternative and complementary medicine is still considered a "fringe" practice among traditional medical circles, most alternative medical procedures are safe and many people find them to be effective.
