Alternative and Complementary Medicine

Alternative medical specialists treat people seeking alternatives to surgery, prescription drugs, and other traditional medical procedures.

They typically recommend nutritional changes, exercise, and stress management techniques to their patients. Additionally, alternative medical specialists focus more on prevention rather than treatment. They believe, if treated properly, the body can heal itself. Many incorporate ancient medical treatments and meditation into treatment plans.

Although alternative and complementary medicine is taboo in some traditional medical circles, most alternative medical procedures are safe.

Additional details about alternative and complementary medicine can be obtained from these organizations:
  • National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine
  • Columbia University's Rosenthal Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine
  • The University of Maryland's School of Medicine
  • The Society for Acupuncture Research
